How it works: The X360Key device consists
of 2 parts, a motherboard and a remote.
The
motherboard connects to the SATA port/bus inside the Xbox 360 console and then
to the Xbox 360 DVD drive. The xKey is in essence a fully fledged computer
running embedded Linux. The fact the X360Key is a powerful Linux computer allows
it much greater flexibility and the opportunity to implement features which are
just not possible via the flashing of DVD drive firmware due to the DVD drive
chip's limited capacity and speed.
X360Key is
able to:
- Emulate
(mimic with accuracy) the Xbox 360 DVD drive
- Read USB hard
drives and other USB storage media devices with various file
systems
- Update itself
and other hardware from attached USB storage media
- Communicate
with the xK3y remote and other external USB devices
- A lot more in
the future! (embedded Web server and Wifi connectivity for
example)
The
X360Key remote is a simple, stylish device that features an OLED display and 3
buttons. It is used outside the Xbox 360 console and connects to the X360Key
main/motherboard inside the console via a high speed USB 2 connection. The
remote also has a USB port that is used to connect USB hard drives and other
storage devices to load games from. The OLED display and buttons are used to
control various aspects of the xKey and for browsing the attached USB storage
media devices and launching games.
The
X360Key is a truly revolutionary Xbox 360 game loading device. The xKey is a
fully solderless plug and play DVD emulation solution that supports ALL RETAIL
(NOT JTAG) 'Phat' and 'Slim'* Xbox 360 consoles. It allows games to be loaded
from an external USB hard drive or flash device which plugs in to the Xbox360Key
external remote with OLED display.

How
it Works: (Please
note the information below is based on what is currently available from the
X360Key team and is subject to change before final
release)
The
X360Key runs a custom Linux operating system that emulates the Xbox 360 DVD
drive, mimicking the original DVD drive of the console but allowing games to be
loaded from a USB storage device rather than a DVD. What this means in practice
is that the Xbox 360 sees the xKey and attached storage device as the DVD drive
the console came with and is accustomed to loading from. The X360Key team has
developed profiles for each of the availalble DVD drives to ensure that as far
as the Xbox 360 console is concerned, the console sees the xK3y and storage
device with games on as the original DVD drive.
The
X360Key main/motherboard is fitted between the DVD SATA port on Xbox 360
motherboard and the original Xbox 360 DVD drive in the console. The X360Key
plugs in to the Xbox 360 DVD Drive itself and then the SATA cable from the Xbox
360 motherboard SATA port is plugged in to the xK3y. The X360Key OLED display
remote is then plugged in to the xk3y mainboard but is kept outside the console
to allows USB storage drives to be connected to it. The remote allows the
X360Key to be controlled and games to be browsed on the USB drive and
launched.
The
X360Key functions in two modes:
- Emulation
- The mode in which the Xbox 360 drive is emulated and allows games to be loaded
from USB storage device.
- Pass
through - The X360Key is bypassed and the Xbox360 console and DVD drive function
as normal as if the X360Key were not present.

The
x360key team have done everything they can to make this device ready to
install. Its a solderless
installation! The problem
with xbox 360 drives is that they are locked to the console they are in via a
serial number. This means that you cannot just swap DVD drives over without
first getting the key out the original drive, and putting it in the replacement
drive. So you will need to input for key into the x360key for it to properly
emulate the drive. Getting the information usually requires expensive hardware
(lizard or usb pro etc). The team are trying hard to deliver an update so that
the x360key can get this information out on its own. We are not sure if it can be done without
extra hardware, so please do not buy this product and wait for an update to come
out!
If
you would like us to install it for you (If you are in Australia) please select
the correct option in the drop down box above. If we have modfed your xbox
before, please email us to see if we have a copy of your firwmare so we can
email you the files so you can complete the install yourself.
Compatibility
Which
360 Consoles are compatible at launch?
Advantages / Disadvantages
Considering
the other solution is to flash your DVD drive.
Advantages:
- Cheaper in the long run, due to the fact that you never have to burn any
media.
- Upgradable WITHOUT opening the console, the updates are via USB which means
there is no need to consistently get your xbox reflashed by professionals.
- Fasting loading times via USB
- Future features like a web control panel will allow you to change games
without getting up off your lazy ass ;)
- No or Less wear and tear on your DVD drives. Everyone that has had a 360 for
a while knows that 360 DVD drives aren't the best, and maybe people and up
getting faulty lasers after a couple of years. Drive replacements cost about
$100. This device will ensure that having a faulty drive is pretty much
impossible because....you aren't using it anymore!
- An alternative to c4eva....For a LONG time c4eva has an a fantastic job at
making firmwares for flashing DVD drives. The only problem is that the market is
very much reliant on his work. Future DVD drives may get hacked by x360key team
before c4eva.
Disadvantages:
- The initial cost outlay, compared to drive flashing is more. Personally I
prefer buying something thats more expensive that I know will not have any
additional costs, then to buy something for $60, and then pay $30 twice a year,
and $2~$3 every time I want to burn a disc, and $80 for a Kreon drive or 0800
drive to rip my originals....do the math!

Future features!
This
feature are planned to come out with a firmware update. The dates, and how fast
the team can pump them out is not known so please don't buy the product based on
a future feature unless you a patient person.
- Xtractor support to get key out of drive without any extra hardware (not
sute if this is possible anymore, please dont buy based of this)
- Extra Xbox Live safety
- Support for more slim Xbox 360 models
- Web Control Panel (requires Wifi dongle which will be sold separately)
- Loading games from NFS and Samba shares (requires Wifi dongle which will be
sold separately)

FAQ
Configuring
xKey - Fats xKey requires a dump of the original firmware
from your drive. This is copied to the xKey's SD card, when the xKey boots the
firmware file its analysed, the drive type is identified and the drive key etc.
are extracted.
If
you have CFW You should have a backup of the OFW (or all the
information to recreate one) and it is this file that is used to configure xKey.
There is no need to reflash your drive with OFW.
If
you have a stock drive a dump must be obtained using
available tools (we recommend the Maximus Lizard 360).
Configuring
xKey - Slims xKey requires the file set (dummy.bin etc.) that
can be created with available tools, these are copied to the xKey's SD card.
When the xKey boots, the files are analysed, the drive type is identified and
the drive key etc. are extracted.
If
you have CFW You should have a backup of the required files
and they are used to configure xKey. There is no need to reflash your drive with
OFW
If
you have a stock drive a dump must be obtained using
available tools (we recommend the Maximus Lizard 360).
Firmware
Dumping At launch xKey can't dump the drive firmware.
Updates, planned for shortly after release, will allow xKey to perform this task
for you. There is no need to flash your drive and 0225+ owners can enjoy all the
benefits of xKey without the hassle of swapping PCBs or waiting for an unlock
hack
